Westerly Sun Letters to the Editor

I would like to commend the Westerly Substance Abuse Task Force on the excellent family forum presented at the Westerly Middle School Friday night. In cooperation with the Westerly Police Department and Westerly Public Schools, the forum was a real eye-opener. I applaud the 30 or so parents that came and listened to this important message, but I urge all parents of middle school students to attend future forums.

The presentation by RI Assistant Attorney General Jay Sullivan was very powerful. As he spoke, a background of slides told the story of the many teens who have died in speed and alcohol-related car accidents in Rhode Island so far this year.

The chief of prevention for the state MHRH delivered an informative message about helping kids make good choices and avoid risky behaviors associated with underage drinking.

Westerly Police Chief Edward Mello also gave a profound presentation. It was enlightening to learn that 12 is the average age for kids to take their first drink of alcohol!

I attended because I was curious about this educational program, but it really hit home for me because of my own personal connection. I lost my 17-year-old brother, then a Chariho High senior, 33 years ago in a speed-related car accident. Stephen, "Rusty," would have celebrated his BIG 50 on Sept. 24.

Car crashes are the number one killer of teens in our country. We all know that speed is a common risk factor with young drivers, but that risk fueled by alcohol is an even deadlier combination. I bring this up to make a point: it can happen to anyone.

I support the Westerly Substance Abuse Task Force and its good work. This is an important topic as we know all too well. We need to address the underage drinking crisis in our nation and in our towns. If elected, I promise to support the task force and its alliance with Westerly Public Schools and the Westerly Police Department. The safety and future of our children depend on it.
